Most people have a scar or two, whether they are small and minor or large and noticeable. Scars do not always require treatment, but options are available to help reduce or remove a scar. Many patients choose to pursue scar removal for cosmetic reasons. Others may wish to remove a reminder of a traumatic event. Finally, scars can be removed if they restrict movement or cause pain. The experts at West Sound Dermatology in Poulsbo, WA can help.

What Causes Scars?

Scars are caused by some sort of injury to the skin. As the skin heals, a thick and firm area of tissue will develop. Early after healing, this tissue is typically pink or red in color, but will eventually fade to a color lighter or darker than the surrounding skin. Scars may be caused by a cut, burn, scrape or incision.

Types of Scars

Typical scars are sometimes referred to as a “fine line” scar. Other common types include:

  • Keloids, which are enlarged and dark in color
  • Hypertrophic scars, which are thick and raised
  • Atrophic scars, which are sunken. Acne scars are typically a type of atrophic scar.

Scar Treatment Options

Several treatments may be beneficial in removing or reducing a scar. Your provider may recommend corticosteroid injections, silicone gel sheets and ointments or surgical removal. Cosmetic treatments including laser treatments, chemical peels and microneedling may also be beneficial.
