What are Scabies?

Scabies is a parasitic infection caused by microscopic burrowing mites known as Sarcoptes scabiei. Scabies mites burrow into the skin and deposit eggs, resulting in intense itching and small blisters or bumps which occur in thin, irregular tracks. Scabies blisters are most common in folds of the skin, such as the underarms. Itching is typically worse at night. The infection is highly contagious, as the mites can pass between people through close contact or by sharing clothing or bedding.
