Eczema, or atopic dermatitis, is one of the most common skin conditions. This chronic condition causes itchy and dry skin that is not the result of outside stimuli, allergens or an infection. If you are suffering with eczema symptoms, schedule an appointment with the providers at West Sound Dermatology.

What Causes Eczema?

Eczema is believed to be caused by genetic factors, as the condition typically runs in families. Common comorbidities with eczema include allergies, hay fever or asthma. If you have these conditions or a family history of atopic dermatitis, you are more likely to have or develop the condition yourself.

Eczema Symptoms

Eczema symptoms can range from mild irritation to severe and disruptive issues. Most patients will experience periodic flares of symptoms through their lives, with symptoms typically beginning before the age of five. Common symptoms include:

  • Dry skin
  • Itchiness
  • Red, brown or gray patches
  • Small, raised bumps
  • Thick, cracking or scaly skin
  • Sensitive skin
  • Swelling, especially after scratching

Eczema Treatment Options

Your provider will first recommend lifestyle changes to help control your eczema. This includes identifying triggers for flare-ups, frequent moisturizing and taking shorter showers or baths.

Common treatment options for eczema include corticosteroid creams and ointments or calcineurin inhibitors. An injectable biologic treatment called dupilumab can also be prescribed. As needed, your provider may recommend in-office treatments such as phototherapy.
